Outreach Funding, Volunteers & Partners
Our Outreach program is funded by some amazing organizations, as well as by generous donations from individuals in the community and PRC fundraising events. Countless families have donated clothing and baby supplies for distribution and we continue to thank them for their generosity of time and spirit. Our wonderful and hard-working Outreach volunteers provide us with their expertise in teaching, social work, nursing and law. And we are very appreciative of the support from our kind benefactors and partners with whom the Outreach programs are possible, including:
- The Port Washington Community Chest for generously provided funding since 1982. Please remember this support of the Parent Resouce Center when you are asked to give to the Community Chest.
- The Port Washington School District for their collaboration and support.
The PRC offers financial assistance for families to participate in our parent-child and separation classes in the form of scholarships. These are awarded on a sliding scale based on the applicant’s household income and the number of individuals in the household. In addition to classes, many other PRC events are offered at a reduced rate to qualified families.
The “Stepping Stones” class is a parent/caregiver and child class. This class provides socialization and encourages exploration as steps along the way of preparing children for Pre-Kindergarten. The class is divided according to age and is led by teachers and parents. Activities include singing songs, listening to music, making art projects, listening to story books, and practicing gross motor skills in the Gym.
A school bus provides free transportation to class. A parent/caregiver must accompany their child on the bus. Buses pick up Outreach program participants at designated bus stops.
Please email our PRC Outreach Coordinator or call our office at 516-439-4058 for more details about use of this transportation service.

In addition to our regular activities we often arrange Special Events. In the past these have included special music classes with instruments and puppet shows, and visits from our four-legged friends at the Alley Pond Environmental Center. The Girl Scouts ran an evening where our children wore pajamas and listened to the Scouts read bedtime stories. As a community-run program, we aim to take advantage of our diverse and talented community.
Our summer programs often feature weekly all-day field trips. We have visited the Long Island Children’s Museum, White Post Farms, Jones Beach, Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, NY and the New York Hall of Science. A summer hit is the special water party we throw outside at the PRC’s water-play area.
